The seventeenth edition of the International Symposium of Magnetic Bearings will be held at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in Rio de Janeiro. It is promoted by COPPE/UFRJ, being supported by SBA (Brazilian Society of Automation), SOBRAEP (Brazilian Association of Power Electronics) and CTM-SP (Navy Technological Center).
COPPE is the largest engineering and research center in Latin America. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, the institution has 300 full-time Ph.D. professors, 3,000 students and 350 staff members, including researchers and technical and administrative staff. Founded in 1963, under the leadership of the engineer Luiz Alberto Coimbra, a man ahead of his time, COPPE was the first postgraduate institute in engineering of Brazil. Since then, it stands out as a center of knowledge, qualified professionals and teaching methods, serving as a model for other universities and research institutes. COPPE’s academic structure includes 12 Programs in the Engineering Areas: Biomedical, Civil, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Nuclear, Oceanic, Energy Planning, Computing, Production, Chemistry, Transportation and Electrical (PEE).
In its fifty years of existence, the PEE has trained about 1200 masters and 300 doctors and has dedicated special attention to the dissemination, in international magazines, of the main results from the defended theses (available in full text through the website http://www.pee.ufrj.br/tesis). The work of the PEE is enriched and complemented by cooperation with centers of excellence in different parts of the world, involving the development of joint research projects, doctoral traineeships (sandwich) and participation in courses abroad.
